Lab 5: Plants and Energy Lab

Materials:

  • Elodea
  • Chlorophyll extract
  • Tradescantia guard cells
  • Potato
  • Sweet potato (white and brown)
  • Turnip
  • Apple
  • Pear
  • Banana
  • Stains
  • Microscope
Experiment:
  • Prepare paper marking the inoculation point on chromatography paper.
  • Prepare paper inoculation of sample on chromatography paper.
  • Add solvent adding solvent to the chromatography development cylinder.
  • Place paper in the developing solution.
  • Analyze reactions
  • Record data
  • Present results

Lab 4: Diffusion and Osmosis Lab

Materials:

  • Thistle tube, dialysis tubing, corn syrup
  • India ink solution for slides
  • IKI and Methylene Blue solutions
  • Bore and agar plate
  • IKI and Methylene Blue in agar
  • IKI and Methylene Blue in agar - solutions
  • Ohaus balance
  • Glucose solution, thread, dialysis tubing
  • Cold water bath
  • Warm water bath
Experiment:
  • Bore 2 holes in agar plate and fill holes
  • Fill holes with liquid
  • Separate/open dialysis tubing
  • Pour glucose and tie off the glucose bag
  • Dry dialysis tube with glucose solution
  • Weigh dialysis tube with glucose solution using Ohaus balance
  • Place dialysis tube in warm water bath
  • Observe results

Lab 2: Microscope Lab

Materials:

  • Compound light microscope
  • Dissecting scope
  • Various whole mount slides (e.g., letter e, threads, etc.)
  • Various wet mount preparations (paramecium, volvox, etc.)
  • Slides and coverslips
  • Stains
Exercises:
  • Know the parts of the compound light microscope
  • Know the parts of the dissecting scope
  • Learn how to use the compound light microscope
  • Learn how to use the dissecting scope
  • Learn how to make wet mount slides
  • Learn how to stain slides
  • Apply knowledge of the microscope, slide preparation, staining in a forensic crime simulation

  • Coin for random selection
  • Data sheet for data collection
  • Computer for statistical analysis
Exercises:
  • Conduct an experiment on Therapeutic Touch
  • Test hypothesis that humans have energy fields and can detect these fields
  • Share data with class and analyze results
  • Answer biological question and present results
